Chauncey Hugh Stigand (1877–1919) was a British army officer, colonial administrator and big game hunter. He was killed in action while attempting to suppress a rebellion of Aliab Dinka. Theodore Roosevelt wrote that "Captain Stigand is one of the most noted ofrecent African big game hunters and explorers ....Among the hunter-naturalists to whom we owe most of our knowledge of the enthrallingly interesting life-histories of African big game, Captain Stigand comes second only to Mr. Selous. When I wrote of protective coloration in 'African Game Trails,' I had had opportunity only to glance at Stigand's admirable book on the game of British East Africa. In this he discusses the subject in masterly fashion, and with a knowledge that could only come to a trained big game hunter and field naturalist gifted with exceptionally keen powers of observation and analysis."-----------------------------------------------------Contents:Chapter I. – IntroductoryChapter II. - Animal Life of the CountryChapter III. - Coloration of Game AnimalsChapter IV. - "Hunting" versus "Shooting"Chapter V. - The PlainsChapter VI. - Stalking GameChapter VII. - The River of the PlainsChapter VIII. - What is Learnt from SpoorChapter IX. - The BushChapter X. - The Game of Uganda and the Eastern CongoChapter XI. - The ForestChapter XII. - Trek and CampChapter XIII. - The Preservation of GameThis book published in 1913 has been reformatted for the Kindle and may contain an occasional defect from the original publication or from the reformatting.
